Within a short distance of Canute's field, there is a surprisingly rich mix of countryside charm, heritage villages and towns giving visitors much to explore. It’s one of those parts of the county where you can create a holiday with a mix of countryside walks and visits to historic buildings and picture book villages and towns. It's a perfect spot for relaxed weekends, scenic walks, and low‑key days out.

Stamford
Stamford has long been lauded as a lovely stone town. Sir Walter Scott claimed that Stamford was “the finest sight on the road between Edinburgh and London” and the historian WG Hoskins said “If there is a more beautiful town in the whole of England, I have yet to see it”. More recently the Sunday Times declared it as ‘Britain’s top place to live’.
Burleigh House
A magnificent House, built by William Cecil as home to the dynasty that he founded. Burghley is one of the largest and grandest surviving houses of the sixteenth century and a wonderful example of the great Elizabethan ‘prodigy’ houses, built to honour the Queen.

Fotheringay
Fotheringhay Castle, now only a grassy mound beside the River Nene, was once a powerful Norman motte‑and‑bailey fortress built around 1100. It later became the birthplace of King Richard III in 1452 and the setting for the trial and execution of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1587, before being demolished in the 1630.
Nearby, St Mary and All Saints Church stands as a striking 15th‑century Perpendicular landmark with its distinctive octagonal tower. It serves as a partial mausoleum for the House of York and contains commemorative tombs commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I, preserving the village’s deep royal connections.
Nene Valley Railway
The Nene Valley Railway is one of the UK’s most distinctive heritage railways and is recognised as the country’s leading international steam and diesel attraction.
Based at Wansford Station in Cambridgeshire, the railway runs for 7.5 miles through the picturesque Nene Valley, serving the stations of Overton (for Ferry Meadows), Orton Mere, Yarwell Junction and Peterborough (Nene Valley).
